The Melbourne Heart was founded in 2007 after the Football Federation of Australia, inspired by strong crowd numbers for the Melbourne Victory, decided to establish another A-League team based in the Victorian capital. Granted admission to the A-League on 12 June 2009 for the 2010-2011 season, the Heart set about building a team that would fulfil their desires to be driven by a vision for a broad based community team, celebrating cultural diversity and sporting passion through football.

Finishing 8th in their inaugural season, the Heart have made their mark in Melbourne already, signing Jon Bon Jovi as their No. 1 international season ticket holder and beating their cross town rivals, the Melbourne Victory, in their first local derby.
